The formation of Malaysian Society for Hip and Knee Surgeons (MSHKS) was first mooted by Dr Jamal Azmi and Dr Ruslan Simanjuntak, who were both pioneers of the Malaysian Arthroplasty Interest Group (MAIG), a subspecialty interest group of the Malaysian Orthopaedic Association (MOA). This idea came about due to the need for an independent, organized platform to address learning, discuss cases and hold events on hip and knee-related pathologies affecting both the young and old, as well as to facilitate networking and friendship with similar regional and international societies. The MSHKS was successfully registered with the Registrar of Societies on 30th January 2019.
On the 1st of May, 2019, MSHKS was officially launched at the Le Méridien Hotel Kuala Lumpur. This historic event was graced by the MSHKS Patron, Dr Lawrence D. Dorr, invited local and international guests from Australia, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Hong Kong, and the Philippines, as well as industry partners. Dato’ Dr Badrul Shah Badaruddin, the protem president, kicked off the event with a welcoming speech, followed by Dr Jamal Azmi, who elaborated on the mission and goals of the MSHKS. Three distinguished speakers, Dr Lawrence Dorr, Dr David Liu, and Dr Aree Tanavalee, delivered well-received lectures on spinopelvic mobility and hip and knee revision arthroplasty.
